Understanding Gold Price Calculation

Making Charges

Making charges are the craftsmanship and labour costs added by jewellers to the gold price. These charges vary based on the design complexity and the jeweller:

  • Gold coins and bars: 0–3% making charges
  • Simple jewellery (chains, plain bangles): 8–12%
  • Medium designs (rings, earrings): 12–18%
  • Intricate designs (necklaces, antique work): 18–25%

GST on Gold

In India, gold purchases attract a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 3% on the total value including making charges. This is applicable on gold jewellery, coins, and bars. The GST is calculated as:

GST = (Gold Value + Making Charges) × 3%

Gold Price Formula

The total gold price is calculated using the formula:

Total Price = (Weight × Rate per Gram × Purity Factor) + Making Charges + GST

For example, for 10 grams of 22K gold at ₹15,170/gram with 12% making charges, the calculation would be:

  • Gold value: 10 × ₹15,170 = ₹1,51,700
  • Making charges (12%): ₹18,204
  • Subtotal: ₹1,69,904
  • GST (3%): ₹5,097
